The trend towards industrial style has been building up for a while and now it has really come into its own. The presence of texture, strong lines, a mix of materials as metal and wood, and a look at the not too distant past of the Nineteenth Century Industrial Revolution all distinguish this style.

This casual contemporary look originated in France and was then popularized in America by Restoration Hardware. Jackie Hirschhaut of AHFA says “Its prevalence now, in everything from luxury brands to more mainstream furniture lines, is hard to explain, but it may have something to do with the interesting contrast it provides for our complex, technology-driven lifestyles,”

The industrial style in furniture is sometimes not just restricted to the way it looks, but you will find that some of the furniture is made from reclaimed wood and old factory hardware. Quite remarkably only minimal restoration has turned that material into very striking and functional furniture pieces.

Industrial style furniture is also constructed using sandblasted or raw wood, which is then distressed to varying degrees. Hardware and metal accents add an industrial feel, and designs can be modular. Occasional tables and smaller storage pieces have visible casters, using them as design as well as functional elements.

Industrial style furnishings are available in all different categories including media consoles, cocktail tables as well as book shelves and laptop desks. However this style works on many different levels.
