Definition: A bergère is an upholstered armchair with an exposed wood frame and enclosed sides. The arms are shorter than the depth of the seat, which features an upholstered apron topped with a loose cushion. Introduced during the Louis XV period in France (1715-1774), bergères remain popular today and are still produced by a number of manufacturers.
