Accent furniture is a piece of furniture that complements a room's decor. The term comes from a meaning of the word accent which means stress, or emphasis.
A piece of accent furniture goes beyond mere functionality, and is often used for its decorative value above all. You may not even need it, but it draws the eye in and creates a bit of excitement, much like an accent color. Its purpose is to add color and definition to an an interior space.
Most often small tables that are painted, inlaid or have some other interesting treatment are used as accent furniture, but it could just as well be a large and imposing piece.
