Furnishing a flexible home office has become both a necessity and a challenge in today's homes. That challenge may partially be due to the fact that today's home office may not even have its own room. It is a necessity because it has become a very important part of today's lifestyle.

Since everyone uses their work space differently, there is no one single correct way to furnish it effectively. There are several considerations for determining the best option. After all, you do want a work space that suits your needs, is comfortable, and also looks good.

Who Uses a Home Office?

Practically everyone uses it, which is why we talk about furnishing a flexible home office. Children need a workspace for homework, creative play and school projects. Grownups need it for even more different activities, such as office work, conducting a home business, communicating, paying bills, and the list goes on.

Oftentimes, the entire family uses the home office, but all the users do not necessarily share the same needs, which can be very different.

Different Home Office Needs

Different needs determine different solutions. Depending on the kind of work, a dedicated room may or may not be needed. For instance, a self-employed craftsperson will not only need space to work, but also storage solutions for supplies and finished projects. A larger work surface is required and would also have to be configured to make the work process efficient.

Someone who primarily uses a computer for working at home may have different space requirements, and the home office may not be confined to just one room. Laptops and tablets may easily be moved from room to room. While storage is always needed, there is the question of how just how much, what kind, and where to locate it for maximum efficiency.

Making Use of Available Space

While a separate room might be available, it is not always possible, or even desired. An American Home Furnishings Alliance study found that close to 73% of Americans report that when they are working at home, they consider their office to be wherever they can use a computer. With the technology making it possible to use the computer anywhere in the home, it opens up a lot of options.

More than half the respondents in the study mentioned above say that it is important to them to have multiple rooms at home where different members of the family can work effectively and comfortably. Today's home office may be in the family room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen or garage. It may be in all of these spaces within the same home. Flexibility is what most people are looking for.

The answer may very well lie in finding and buying the right furniture.

Today's Home Office Trends

  • Multifunctional furniture for a variety of uses
  • Smaller scale to fit in corners or areas of a room that has another primary purpose
  • Wire management features
  • Modular groups for flexibility

Finding the Right Furniture for Your Home Office Needs

We all have different home office needs depending on how we use them, so it becomes imperative to choose furniture with features that fit those needs. Look for these features when buying any piece of furniture for your home.

Flexibility: If flexibility means using more than one space in the home for working, look for furniture with mobility. Desks, workstations, storage furniture and chairs may be conveniently rolled from one room to the other.

However, moving a piece of furniture from room to room is not the only option, using several different judiciously selected pieces is also a solution, as is multifunctional furniture. Office chairs can be used in place of regular dining chairs.

Convenience: Look for furniture with built in wire management and charging stations. This feature is even present in certain nightstands and coffee tables, along with desks and cabinets.

Organization: Organization is no longer confined to shelves and cabinets. Look for storage features in end tables, coffee tables, armories and desks. Of course, shelves are extremely desirable when there is shortage of floor space. Decorative baskets and boxes make it easy to stay organized.

Scale:Smaller pieces are easier to fit into rooms that are primarily used for other purposes. Small writing desks serve the purpose quite well. Some of them offer drop down drawer fronts that can be used for laptops. Small accent tables that can be used for laptops.

Style: You do not have to forgo style to set up an efficient home office. Select office furniture that matches the existing decor in your house. It is easy to do so when buying multifunctional pieces. If you prefer you can use accent pieces in bright colors create excitement and to make things more interesting. Contrasting styles or using contrasting materials can also make a work space more attractive.
