Buying Recycled Office Furniture

By Abe Abbas, About.com

If you’re in the market for office furniture, buying used or recycled office furniture can be an option. There are plenty of good reasons to do so. Recycled office furniture typically costs 30 to 50 percent less than new furniture, it saves you money for running your business, and you help the environment by reducing waste.

Different Kinds of Recycled Furniture

Recycled can mean many things, as this word describes any used furniture that finds its way back into the market. There are three ways it can be classified:

  • Re-manufactured furniture
This is furniture that has been restored to its original condition. Purchasing re-manufactured furniture is the closest to purchasing new furniture as you can choose the colors, fabrics, and surfaces.
  • Refurbished furniture
This furniture has not undergone the extensive renewal process of re-manufactured furniture, but has simply been cleaned, repaired, and touched up with fresh paint and new fabrics.
  • Reused furniture
This term is used for furniture that hasn't been altered or repaired. Other terms for this are “as is” or “used.”

Buying Tips

  • Check the ReCycled Office Furniture Directory to find buying resources in your area.
  • Always make sure you have a good understanding of what you're buying and that you trust the seller. To helps you know what you are buying, understand the difference between re-manufactured, refurbished, and reused furniture.
  • Do a little comparison shopping because you should never assume you're saving money simply by buying used goods. Compare new and used furniture prices, warranties, and service options.
  • Check the dealer's reputation to be certain they have solid references. Only work with experienced dealers, and look for some one who works with the product lines that interest you. For instance, if you want to buy re-manufactured Herman Miller office furniture, find some one who has experience working with that line.
  • Look for a warranty. There are no industry-wide standards for re-manufactured furniture, but many dealers will match the original warranty.
