Like other furniture, most dining tables have standard measurements. Factors such as your room size and how many people you'd like to fit at the table help determine which standard dining room table measurements are right for you.

Before purchasing the size table you might think you need, measure your room and any other furniture you plan to put in the space. Dining table dimensions can vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, never assume that every table that seats four people will have the same dimensions. Read on to learn more about dining table dimensions before you go shopping.

Standard Dining Table Dimensions

Table Height

The standard heights of dining tables are typically consistent even if they are different shapes or sizes. To function well, tables have to be high enough so that there is enough clearance space above the knees of those who are seated. To be able to dine comfortably, tables should not be too high. For that reason, most dining tables are 28 to 30 inches high from floor to table surface.

An informal dining table is also called a counter-height dining table, and it is often configured to be roughly as high as a kitchen countertop, which is usually about 36 inches high. These tables come in handy in informal eating areas where there might not be a separate dining room.

Table Length

The length of a square, rectangular, or oval dining table determines how many people can comfortably sit at the table. For example, a small table that is 36 to 44 or 48 inches long sits one person per side. A long table that measures 102 to 108 inches can fit either three or four chairs on the long sides, depending on the size and style of the dining chairs.

If you occasionally need to seat many people at your dining table, you may want a table with one leaf or two leaves that can be inserted to give you the flexibility to expand or reduce the length of the table. You can find tables of any shape with leaves.

Table Depth (aka Width)

The depth, or width, of the table, refers to the ends of a square or rectangular table, which also determines how many chairs fit at each end of the table. For example, a table that is 38 to 40 inches deep or wide can fit one chair. A table that is 48 inches wide can usually fit two chairs on each end.

Table Shapes

Round

A round dining room table creates a cozy atmosphere, making it easy to see and converse with everyone at the table without craning your neck. However, this may not be the best shape if you often entertain a large number of people. While it is easy to see everyone, it is hard to carry on a conversation when you have to shout across a large expanse. A huge round dining room table also might not be the best solution for smaller spaces. The standard dimensions of round tables include the following:

  • To seat four people: 36 to 44 inches in diameter
  • To seat four to six people: 44 to 54 inches in diameter
  • To seat six to eight people: 54 to 72 inches in diameter

Oval

Oval tables are also suitable for smaller spaces because corners don't stick out. You can keep the oval table small at 36 to 44 inches in diameter and use leaves to extend it. The standard dimensions of oval tables include the following:

  • To seat four to six people: 36 inches in diameter (minimum) x 56 inches long
  • To seat six to eight people: 36 inches in diameter (minimum) x 72 inches long
  • To seat eight to 10 people: 36 inches in diameter (minimum) x 84 inches long

Square

A square dining table has many of the same advantages and disadvantages as a round table. Everyone can sit close together for an intimate dinner and conversation. But if you plan to seat more than four people, it is better to buy a square table that extends into a rectangle with a leaf. Also, square tables are not suitable for narrow dining rooms. Here is a common dimension for a square table:

  • To seat four people: 36 to 33 inches square

Rectangular

Of all the different table shapes, a rectangular table is the most common choice for dining rooms. Rectangular tables take up the most space but are the best choice for larger gatherings. A narrow rectangular table may be the most suitable shape for a long, narrow dining room. As with other styles, some rectangular tables come with leaves that allow you the flexibility to change the length of the table. Here are the common dimensions for rectangular dining tables:

  • To seat four people: 36 inches wide x 48 inches long
  • To seat four to six people: 36 inches wide x 60 inches long
  • To seat six to eight people: 36 inches wide x 78 inches long

FAQ
  • What is the average size of most dining rooms?

The standard size dining room in the United States is 14 by 16 feet or just over 200 square feet. Larger dining rooms can measure 14 by 18 feet to accommodate a formal-size table, china cabinet, or buffet.

  • How narrow can a dining room table be?

The minimum comfortable width for a dining room table, accommodating at least two people, their plates, cutlery, and glassware, is 30 inches. However, it doesn't leave much space for serving dishes and other table items. If your dining room has an unusual shape, consider a DIY dining table to fit the space.

  • How much space should you leave around a dining room table?

Before buying a table for your dining area, take some measurements and account for 3 feet of clearance on each side of the table. Allowing 3 feet will give ample space to pull out chairs from the table and walk behind seated people.

  • How much room does every person need at the table?

Each seated person needs a width of 24 inches (from shoulder to shoulder) and about 15 inches in depth for their plates, glasses, and silverware. Keep these dimensions in mind when shopping for dining room chairs.
