The Spruce
Bunk beds are a great way to maximize space in a small bedroom or vacation rental. Aside from being fun to use, the best bunk beds are sturdy, typically made of solid wood or steel, with an ample weight capacity for the intended users. They should also be a great fit for the size and design of the room.
For example, bunk beds with under-bed storage or trundle beds—which provide a third bed—can make a small space even more functional. A ladder provides accessibility to the top bunk without taking up a larger footprint, but a bed with stairs can be much easier to climb up and down (and some include bonus storage).
Although traditional options are twin over twin, we also love bunk beds with a full-sized bed on the bottom bunk. This provides more space for adults or bigger kids to snooze, but you’ll want to measure the room first (as you would with any bunk bed).
Also, keep in mind the height of the bed; you’ll want to have at least 30 inches between the top bunk and the ceiling to sit up in bed comfortably.
Our Top Picks
Best Overall
Pottery Barn Kids Camp Twin-Over-Twin Bunk Bed
Converts into two twin beds
Ladder can be used on both sides
Available in five different finishes
Room for storage or a trundle underneath
250-pound weight capacity
We chose the Pottery Barn Kids Camp Twin-Over-Twin Bunk Bed as our best overall bunk bed because it’s a durable, high-quality option with a versatile design. The ladder can be installed on either side of the bunk bed, and as your needs change, you can convert it into two separate twin beds.
We also love that it comes in five different finishes and has a classic look with paneled headboards, so it can blend into almost any room’s aesthetic. Add even more sleeping space with a trundle bed (sold separately), which can be used with a mattress or without for extra storage. Of course, you can also add a few under-bed storage containers to store out-of-season clothes or toys because there’s room underneath the bottom bunk.
We wish it had a higher weight capacity—the top bunk can hold 250 pounds—but we love that it’s made of solid kiln-dried wood and has GreenGuard Certification, which means it shouldn’t emit harmful fumes. The bed is 6 feet high, so you’ll want to ensure the room has enough clearance.
Height: 72 in. | Material: Kiln-dried solid wood, MDF | Size: Twin | Weight Capacity: 250 lbs. for each bed
Best for Small Spaces
Mainstays Twin-over-Twin Low Profile Junior Bunk Bed
Slim frame
Angled ladder for easier climbing
Room underneath for storage
Lower weight capacity for top bunk
The Mainstays Twin-over-Twin Low Profile Junior Bunk Bed is our favorite space-saving bed because of its sleek metal frame and lower height. At less than 50 inches tall, it’s perfect for rooms with lower ceilings.
It features an angled ladder (unlike our best overall), making it easier to climb up and down. The straightforward frame also simplifies assembly. The top bunk does have a smaller weight capacity at 200 pounds (250 pounds for the lower bunk) than our best overall, but it’s a good budget-friendly alternative.
Keep in mind that you can’t separate this into two beds, so it’s not as versatile. However, unlike many smaller bunk beds, this one does have some room under the bottom bunk for storage.
Height: 49.5 in. | Material: Metal, steel | Size: Twin | Weight Capacity: 200 lbs. for top bunk, 250 lbs. for bottom bunk

Bunk beds with space-saving features are a great option for kids' bedrooms, but we also found impressive design-forward options with sturdy frames that are perfect for teens and adults.
For example, the Lark Manor Aileana Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed has a weight capacity on the top bunk of 400 pounds, is made of solid wood, and is available in seven different finishes. The bottom bunk is only 2 inches off the floor, though, so you won’t have any under-bed storage space.
The Isabelle & Max Ambur Twin over Twin Solid Wood Standard Bunk Bed also has a 400-pound weight capacity per bunk, but it stands out among other options for its mid-century modern look.
The Harriet Bee Kean Twin Over Twin Solid Wood Standard Bunk Bed is similar to the Aileana bunk bed, but it has stairs instead of a ladder. It’s also 50 inches high, but it does take up a larger footprint. There’s no room underneath for storage, but the stairs do have drawers, which we love to help contain the clutter.
Best Convertible
Crate & Kids Gemini Wood Kids Twin Over Twin Convertible Bunk Bed
Ample storage space below each bed
Assembly available in some locations
Matching furniture available
Weight capacity isn’t listed
As we know, bunk beds can eventually lose their appeal. Kids want to sleep in separate rooms, get tired of climbing up and down a ladder to go to sleep, or need a different setup (trust us, climbing up to read to your kid on the top bunk can be tiring!).
Whatever the reason, convertible beds like the Crate & Kids Gemini Wood Kids Twin Over Twin Convertible Bunk Bed are great solutions. We love this option (which is similar to our best overall) because it looks just as stylish as a bunk bed and will grow with your needs.
The top bunk has rails that can be removed when used as a single bed (or keep them if desired). They are almost 10 inches (in height) below the beds for storage, and you can even purchase a matching dresser, bookcase, or shelves to complete the look.
However, we wish the weight capacity was listed. Like most of our options, you will have to assemble this yourself, although in-home delivery (with placement and assembly included) is available for some locations.

The Whalefall 2 IN 1 Metal Bunk Bed Twin Over Twin has more of an industrial feel, making it a fun option for teens or adults as well as kids. The top bunk can accommodate up to 330 pounds (the bottom is 440), and the frame is higher for taller kids or adults, with ample storage room underneath.
The Babyletto Tiptoe Bunk Bed has a modern, two-tone look, and is also GreenGuard certified like our best overall, but almost half the price. You can also purchase a matching trundle bed, which is great for sleepovers, even if the bunk beds are used separately.
If you want a storage bed, the Mack and Milo Absecon Twin Over Twin Solid Wood Standard Bunk Bed has drawers underneath the bottom bunk. These drawers are helpful whether the bed is used as a bunk bed or by itself.
Best Twin Over Full
Max & Lily Twin Over Full Bunk Bed
Can be used as a separate twin and full bed
Higher 400-pound weight capacity
Angled ladder with handholds
Optional bedside tray
Assembly can be time-consuming
A twin over a full bed is a style that can grow with your needs. We like the Max & Lily Twin Over Full Bunk Bed because it also is a convertible bed and it has a 400-pound weight capacity for each bunk.
This option is also GreenGuard certified and has an angled ladder with handholds that make it easier to climb up. There is matching furniture on offer, too, like a bedside tray for the upper bunk, which we think is a very thoughtful feature.
Plus, you can find it in multiple fun colors to match your space. It may be more complicated to assemble, though, so make sure you have a helper and set aside plenty of time.

Like all of the bunk beds on our list, twin over full bunk beds range in price and materials, and not all options are convertible into separate beds.
The Sha Cerlin Loft Bunk Bed Twin Over Full Size with Ladder is a budget-friendly option. It has over a foot of clearance under the bed for storage, but it can only be used as a bunk bed (it doesn’t convert to two beds). This metal bunk bed has a 400-pound weight capacity on either bed and is available in a black or white finish.
The Novogratz Maxwell Twin Over Full Bunk Bed is another metal option, similar to the Sha Cerlin, but it has an angled ladder and is available in navy blue or gray.
The Pottery Barn Hampton Twin-Over-Full Bunk Bed is a fun option for teens and above, with a higher weight capacity of 500 pounds per bed. It can’t be separated into two beds, but we love the two built-in storage drawers that make it functional for a variety of spaces.
Best Metal Frame
IKEA Bunk Bed Frame
Centered ladder
Simple, slim design
Shorter height
Only available in one finish
Although it's not the most innovative in style, we love the IKEA Bunk Bed Frame for its space-saving design, budget-friendly price, and ability to blend into a wide range of decor styles.
This metal frame is a bit on the shorter side at almost 52 inches, but it’s a little taller than our favorite bed for small spaces. It has room under the bottom bunk for storage (about 5 inches), and each bed has a 220-pound weight capacity.
You can’t separate it into two single beds, but we think it’s a great affordable solution if you need the extra bed and you are short on space.
Height: 51.38 in. | Material: Steel | Size: Twin | Ladder Style: Fixed | Weight Capacity: 220 lbs. per bed
More Metal-Frame Bunk Beds We Like
While it doesn’t have any storage space under the bed, the DHP Miles Metal Bunk Bed is another one of our favorite metal-frame bunk beds. The lower bunk is basically on the floor, so it’s pretty easy for kids to climb into. Compared to many others on our list, the top bunk has a lower weight capacity of 200 pounds.
For a metal frame with a higher weight capacity, we love the ikalido Metal Loft Bunk Bed Twin Over Twin. A great option for adults, it has a 400-pound weight capacity per bunk, and is taller, at over 63 inches. Just make sure you have the right ceiling height and room for it. There’s plenty of room underneath for storage, and we also like that it’s available in multiple finishes, including pink.
To really maximize your sleeping space, choose an option like the Miscoos Full Over Full Metal Bunk Bed for Kids, which features two full-size beds that can even be used separately.
Best with Unique Features
Matrix Twin Low Bunk Bed with Slide and Ladder
800-pound weight capacity
Many customizable options
Removable slide and ladders
Sturdy build
Heavy to move
What can be more fun than a bunk bed with a slide? The Matrix Twin Low Bunk Bed with Slide and Ladder stands out for its flexibility in design, despite having a quirky feature like a slide.
The slide can be removed when your kids outgrow it and can be placed on either side of the bunk bed—the same goes for the ladder, too.
We like that this option can be converted into two twin beds. The headboard is available in three different finishes with slats or a flat panel. The manufacturer also offers the option to swap out the ladder for stairs.
This bunk bed has the second-highest weight capacity per bunk on our list at 800 pounds, so it’s great for kids and adults and should hold up for many years to come. Made of solid wood, it’s not as easy to move as a metal frame, so consider placement carefully.

The Francis Lofts & Bunks Twin Over Twin Bunk Beds is a cool option for teenagers and adults—we love the way the ladder attaches to the side—and is the most customizable on our list with the highest weight capacity of 1,000 pounds per bed.

Final Verdict
Our favorite bunk bed is the Pottery Barn Kids Camp Twin-Over-Twin Bunk Bed. We love its durable, solid wood construction and flexibility since you can convert it into two twin beds if necessary. We also love the Mainstays Twin-over-Twin Low Profile Junior Bunk Bed, our best for small spaces pick. While you can’t convert it into two separate beds, we love that it’s budget-friendly with a durable metal frame and a slim profile.
What to Look for in a Bunk Bed
The Perfect Fit for Your Space
First, you'll want to assess the essentials: room size, ceiling height, and specific requirements.
Room size: Make sure the size of the bed matches your space and needs. Bunk beds come in all styles and sizes—the Francis Bunks & Lofts goes up to a California king—and it’s important to ensure the bed will fit in your space.
Pay attention to the ladder style as well; a bed with an angled ladder, like the Ouef’s Perch Bunk Bed, will have a larger footprint than a ladder that’s built into its frame, like the Crate & Kids’ Gemini Wood Convertible Bunk Bed.
Some bunk beds have stairs with built-in shelves or drawers for sneaky storage, like Harriet Bee’s Mimi Twin Over Full Bunk Bed With Stairs, but they might be better suited for larger rooms since the larger footprint eats up more floor space.
Ceiling height: “The minimum ceiling height for bunk beds is generally 8 feet, which allows sufficient headroom for both top and bottom sleepers to sit comfortably without feeling confined,” says Michele Iapicco, principal designer at Iapicco Design Studio. “This height also promotes proper air circulation and reduces the risk of bumping heads on the ceiling.”
Smaller silhouettes like the Mainstays Small Spaces Low Profile Junior Bunk Bed are great for shorter ceiling heights but probably not for tall adults.
Durable, Stable Materials
It might sound obvious, but a bunk bed needs to be sturdy—it’s designed to hold hundreds of pounds of static weight, after all. To ensure it lasts for years, look for "durable materials like metal or solid wood, as these can support heavier weights and ensure longevity,” says Iapicco.
While beds made from MDF—a manufactured wood product that includes wood fibers along with other materials like resin—might be more affordable, they won’t likely be as stable as a solid wood or metal option. MDF is weaker than wood and can be prone to bowing, cracking, and other damage over time.
A wood bed frame, like the Camp Twin-Over-Twin Bunk Bed from Pottery Barn, evokes a classic look and typically offers longtime sturdiness. Wood frames are often kiln-dried, a process that increases the wood's longevity in the face of wear, tear, and weight.
Metal frames, like IKEA's Bunk Bed Frame, have a more modern, “industrial aesthetic.” Typically made of steel, metal bunk beds are very sturdy when it comes to supporting weight and handling everyday wear. However, just keep in mind that metal's durability and stability depend on the quality of the bunk bed frame you choose. Even the toughest metals can create a wobbly frame if they cannot support the sleeper's weight and secure their pieces well.
A Versatile Weight Capacity
Iapicco recommends a ”weight capacity of at least 250 to 400 pounds per bed for optimal safety and comfort,” especially for styles intended for both kid and adult use. “Adults can use bunk beds as long as the bed is designed to support their weight and size, making them ideal for guest rooms or vacation homes,” she says.
Our pick from Francis Bunks & Lofts is built for adults, thanks to its 1,000-pound weight capacity and tall ceiling height options. However, keep in mind that the recommended weight capacity for the top bunk may be lower than that for the bottom bunk. For example, our best pick for small spaces, the Mainstays Twin-over-Twin Low Profile Junior Bunk Bed, has a recommended weight limit of 200 pounds on the top and 250 pounds on the bottom.
One More Thing
Each bunk bed has a recommended bunk bed mattress size (which is typically purchased separately). According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, you'll want to ensure at least 5 inches of clearance from the top of the mattress to the top of the guard rail.
