Question: How to Find the Right Mattress When You Have Back Problems

I was thinking of getting the Cloud but heard that it might not be good for someone with back problems. I am 109 pounds 5'2" with fibromyalgia and an injury to my lower back.

A regular coil mattress is too firm, causing pressure point pain. Pillow tops cause sloping and lower back pain. I need a mattress that gives me the right support for lower back issues, but not too firm to cause pressure points.

The Cloud supreme was too soft with not enough support. I've heard they had a high return rate. Maybe most buyers are bigger than me, so did not get enough support.

Any suggestions on what would be a good fit for me?

Answer:

Buying a mattress is a very personal choice, because only you know what feels good to you. So I hesitate to say buy this or that mattress. However, a good mattress is an investment in your health especially when you suffer from fibromyalgia and back injuries.

I cannot tell you with any certainty, whether a Tempur-Pedic Cloud mattress would be suitable for you or not. The Cloud is soft with a lot of give at first, but after the initial give, it does provide support. However, for a smaller person it may be hard to find that support.

The best sleep surface for someone with back problems is one that is not extremely hard or extremely soft. It seems that there is a need for cushioning, combined with support, and sometimes the sleeping position helps. How much cushioning and how much support you need is probably a matter of personal preferences and physiology. This is what makes it unique for every one.

For those with back problems, specialty sleep surfaces such as memory foam mattresses or even memory foam mattress pads or toppers placed on coil spring mattresses provide relief. But I have also heard from people who hate the body contouring effect of memory foam, and prefer the resilience of waterbeds instead. Some have even found relief on recliners, or even with a mattress placed on the floor.

The best way to determine whether a mattress is a good match for you is to give yourself long enough to truly experience what it feels like. The best option would be to try it overnight in a hotel or at a friend's house. If that is not possible, try it out at a mattress store. Anything from 15 minutes to half an hour should give you some idea. You may need to return several times to truly get an idea. Try lying on it in the same position you normally sleep in.

Your best bet is to invest a lot of time in trying out different mattresses. It may be that you need an adjustable bed along with a mattress that you find comfortable. With severe back problems, the reclining position matters as well as the sleep surface. Using additional pillows and body pillows may also help alleviate the pain somewhat.
