Hand made luxury beds have established a niche in the mattress industry. While they cost much more than an average mattress, they provide superior comfort and support, and last for a very long time.
Hastens of Sweden is one such company that manufactures hand made beds or mattresses, and it has been doing so since 1852. That also makes them Sweden’s oldest manufacturer of beds. Like many other furniture companies that have been around for a long time, Hastens started out making something else. In their case it was saddles and carriage furniture.
That is an interesting factoid, because it was the filling used to make saddles that led to making these luxury beds. That filling is horsehair, and it turned out to be a wonderful filling for mattresses. As a matter of fact, you can find horsehair filling inside antique sofas as well.
But to get back to beds. In the beginning, Hastens only manufactured beds on demand, and as the demand increased, the company changed course and started making beds.
Fast forward to today. Luxury Hastens beds are now available the world over. Hastens also produces accessories that go with these beds, for instance linen, duvets and pillows, mattress tops, to mention a few. You can check them out here.
Take a look at some of their best selling mattresses. For instance, the Proferia bed featured above, features a patented double pocket spring system. This support system is augmented with several thin layers of horsehair, along with at least ten layers of cotton or wool placed in between. The company suggests that this allows horsehair to move, providing greater comfort.
The mattress is finished with hand stitching around the sides, with the name and firmness of the bed embroidered on top. The bed is available in several different colors and patterns, as well as a round version.
Proferia is available in standard sizes, but can be customized for size and firmness.
