Why Sofas Shouldn't Be Named After Celebrities

Well, they can be, but if you're thinking of naming a sofa after a celebrity, you had better clear it with them or their estate.

Maybe you own a Brando sectional from Ashley, and maybe its name reminds you of Marlon Brando. However, Ashley claims that it did not name the sofa after the actor.

Brando Enterprises which controls Marlon Brando's estate took exception to the name of the sofa, calling it an infringement. Brando Enterprises has also gone after Palliser over an entertainment chair, and Harley-Davidson over their Brando boots. Meanwhile, in other litigation news, Ashley is also in the middle of a lawsuit with Humphrey Bogart's estate for another sofa called the "Bogart."

In this case Ashley decided to settle by paying $356,000 instead of going to court. However, according to the Hollywood Reporter, "the stipulated judgement says that the agreement is not an admission from Ashley that the company is liable for Brando's claims."
