The 9 Best Queen Mattresses of 2024, Tested by The Spruce

Comfy, spacious mattresses that’ll please every type of sleeper

A queen-size mattress, bed frame, and pillows on a multicolored background

The Spruce / Chloe Jeong

If your current twin or full-size mattress isn’t spacious enough, it may be time to upgrade to a queen. Not sure where to start in the sea of innerspring, memory foam, hybrid, and other mattress models? We've tested over 50 mattresses, sleeping on each one at home so we can thoroughly examine how they feel as we use them, putting them through tossing and turning as well as middle-of-the-night wake ups, cuddles from pets and kids, and long-term daily use over the course of six months.

Measuring 60 x 80 inches in size, queen beds provide extra space without taking up nearly as much room as a king. They're a great "medium"-sized mattress that can be roomy for one person, while still offering plenty of space for two. In our testing, we've found queen models are nicely versatile, as there are truly mattress types for every sleeper—but choosing the best queen mattress is a highly personal decision, one that can be swayed by everything from a sleeper's personal comfort preferences to preferred sleeping position to sleep temperature.

We've spent hundreds of hours trying queen-size mattresses from a variety of brands, covering many different materials, firmness levels, and support options. Our favorites include memory foam and hybrid models, but we found that the best queen-size options can really vary in their firmness and body-conforming design.

What We Don't Like
  • Mild motion transfer

A combination of excellent comfort and supreme attention to detail makes Saatva’s Memory Foam Hybrid an easy choice for our best overall queen mattress. We love how the blend of different materials provides the perfect middle ground, with a medium firmness that still offers plush, body-conforming relief to accommodate every sleep style.

This mattress includes two layers of memory foam in addition to 8-inch individually wrapped recycled steel coils that work to promote airflow while responding to your body’s movements. We also found the edge support to be exceptional; we were amazed at how we could sit on the edge of the bed with no sagging, even without having our feet planted on the floor. This detail is thanks to the high-density foam rails Saatva uses.

We also love the pressure relief this mattress provides. In our testing, we enjoyed the moderate level of support balanced with a softness that cradles pressure points for a cozy and well-cushioned sleep no matter how you lie—back, side, or stomach. Lastly, while other memory foam mattresses can have an off-gassing odor, we didn’t find that to be the case with this one.

We did experience very minor motion transfer issues in testing—i.e. noticing our partner getting out of bed—but it wasn’t overly problematic. We also do have to note that this mattress is among the most expensive on our list; however, for the quality and the lengthy warranty included, we found the value to match the price. Additionally, it’s heavier than other mattresses, but has handles on the sides and the perk of white glove delivery service.

What We Don't Like
  • Slight odor when opening

If you’re searching for a mattress that provides exceptional support and sits at the lower end of the price spectrum, Linenspa’s Memory Foam and Innerspring Hybrid Mattress is our pick. This mattress is the best budget option that we tested; though it’s under $300, it offers comfort and support similar to more expensive models that we tried. Right out of the packaging, we found it to be supportive with medium firmness, yet it still offers body-conforming plushness.

The hybrid nature of this mattress delivered what we were looking for: Excellent support from the springs and ample cushioning from the memory foam without creating a sinking sensation. It was comfortable whether we slept on our backs or our sides, and we found that we were rolling around less often looking for a comfortable position thanks to the added support. Additionally, while we tested the 8-inch mattress, Linenspa does offer the same mattress in 10- and 12-inch thickness options as well, though they do cost more.

The mattress, which arrives in a box, expanded pretty quickly after opening, taking just five minutes to regain its shape (Linenspa does recommend that you wait between 24 and 72 hours before sleeping on it). Fair warning: There may be a slight plastic odor when you open the mattress. However, it dissipated within the hour, which is much faster than other memory foam mattresses we’ve tested in the lab.

What We Like
  • Body-hugging softness

  • Low motion transfer

  • Lifetime warranty

What We Don't Like
  • Packaged in a lot of plastic

  • Slight plastic odor initially

While slightly pricier than our best under $500 option from Linenspa above, Bear’s Original Mattress is still a standout when it comes to value. With a cooling gel memory foam layer, a foam layer, and a high-density support foam layer, we found that this mattress contours to our bodies excellently. To us, the cushioning foam felt like an initial hug on the surface, but the medium-firm density of the additional layers of foam below kept our joints supported.

In addition to the cooling properties of the gel, the foams used in this Bear mattress feature open cell technology, a detail that helps further dissipate heat. This is ideal for hot sleepers, as that open cell design adds breathability and can help keep your temperature cool. The product works great for those who sleep with a partner, pets, or children; the complete memory foam composition works to eliminate motion transfer throughout the night.

Additionally, if you’re someone who doesn’t love memory foam mattresses because you’re worried about the materials used and composition, this one is UL Greenguard Gold Certified to meet emission standards for chemical exposure and pollutants; it also uses CertiPur-US certified foams, which must meet standards for content of materials, emissions, and durability.

Despite all of the steps Bear takes in regards to emissions and mattress materials, we were bummed that the mattress came wrapped in a lot of plastic–more plastic than necessary, in our opinion, since the mattress had a noticeable plastic odor when we opened it. However, that odor faded within 24 hours, and the strength of the odor fell noticeably once we got rid of the packaging.

What We Like
  • Thick, soft pillow top layer

  • Adaptive gel-flex grid

  • No off-gassing upon opening

What We Don't Like
  • Too tall for some bed frames

  • Mattress color can show through sheets

If you’re willing to shell out some extra money for a top-tier mattress, we like Purple’s RejuvenatePlus Mattress. It’s the thickest on our list at 16.5 inches tall. This mattress isn’t playing around when it comes to providing bang for your buck, especially if you’re someone who loves a sumptuously soft sleeping surface. The top layer of the RejuvenatePlus is a thick pillowy Euro-top style, which is made with plush material that sits flush with the mattress edges, and it expertly cradled us during testing but still provided a firm level of support.

With seven total layers, it’s designed with comfort in mind, and comfort was the key word that kept coming up for us in the lab. Beneath the pillow top layer is a comfort foam layer and a layer of the brand’s proprietary gel-flex grid, which adapts and rebounds to various movements and enhances the mattress’s breathability (similar to the open cell technology of the Bear). Beneath that sits a layer of edge support foam, dual foam comfort layers, and three zones, or sections, of responsive coils. To see all of the technology listed out not only explains why this mattress is thicker, but also explains the price (which is the highest on our list). Plus, we didn’t experience any off-gassing odor when taking it out of the packaging.

While the thicker nature of this mattress is to thank for its incredible comfort, you’ll likely have to make some accommodations due to the size. For starters, if you don’t already have a lower bed frame, you may need to invest in one; otherwise, this mattress will sit high off the ground. You might need deep-pocket sheets for the extra thickness, too. Additionally, because this mattress is a dark color, it can show through light-colored sheets, which isn’t much of an issue when the bed is made.

What We Like
  • Suits multiple sleep styles

  • Cushions pressure points

  • Maintains a comfortable temperature

What We Don't Like
  • Slight bounce in feel

It’s a misconception that firm mattresses offer little to no cushioning. In fact, Purple’s Restore Mattress is our pick for the best firm mattress because it cradles potential pain points while also providing the stability needed for back sleepers, as well as other types. The mattress scored excellently for comfort thanks to its gelflex grid and foam layer. In terms of support, the responsive coils provide a relaxed feel without allowing too much give, which you’ll find with softer options

We also like this mattress’s durability; it holds its shape without developing creases–a detail that can affect your spinal alignment and sleep comfort–even after experiencing a lot of movement with an adjustable base, which we also tested from Purple. The breathability is a standout feature, too, as it kept us from getting overly hot throughout the night (and it balanced temperatures across two sleepers). Lastly, this mattress did particularly well at eliminating motion transfer—we didn’t wake our partners up with our tossing and turning.

Though we did test this mattress with Purple’s adjustable frame, which allowed us to lift up the head and/or foot of the bed, we don’t feel like the base is a must-have. In our first days of testing the Restore mattress there was a slight bounce when sitting or laying on top. It was a slight surprise coming from our usual innerspring, but the adjustment period didn’t deter us from ultimately loving the comfort of this mattress.

What We Don't Like
  • Controls are difficult to see at night

For a night of sleep that suits you and your partner—and delivers supreme comfort—we suggest Saatva’s Solaire Adjustable Mattress. The bed’s firmness can be customized on both sides, ensuring that you each get exactly what you want. Via a remote that comes with the Solaire, you can choose between 50 firmness options. Additionally, you can save these preferred positions in case you want to experiment with a new feel for a night or two. Our testing confirmed that two completely opposite firmness preferences are doable with this bed, and even on the firmest setting, the pillow top offered just the right amount of plushness.

All in all, the mattress features six layers that promote pressure relief and support, plus it’s built with moisture barriers to protect the mechanical components, so if you’re a hot sleeper you don’t have to worry about anything breaking down. One thing we noticed is that the remote control doesn’t light up during use, so it’s best to adjust the firmness settings before you turn out the lights.

  • Soft, sink-in plushness

What We Don't Like
  • Softer edge support

In our testing, we found Purple's RestorePremier Hybrid Mattress to be an excellent option for side sleepers. As we slept on this mattress, it kept our backs and hips in alignment, providing a solid level of support while still enabling us to sink in slightly for added comfort. We would describe the sensation as sleeping atop a very plush cloud. We also found the consistency of this mattress to be particularly comfortable, as it wasn’t just our midsection that sank in; the foam, gel flex grid, and independently responsive coil system conformed to our body to provide comfort without sacrificing support.

One thing to note is that this model does run soft, particularly when it comes to edge support. The edges feel a bit weaker compared to other mattresses on this list, including our best overall, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. If you’re a solo sleeper, the lack of strong sides shouldn’t affect you too much, especially if you consistently sleep in the middle of the bed.

What We Don't Like
  • Latex may require breaking in

  • Dual-sided design not beneficial for all sleepers

If you’re looking for a bed made with organic materials, we love Saatva’s Zenhaven Natural Latex Mattress. It combines wool, hypoallergenic organic cotton, and organic natural latex to create a flippable product that features one luxury plush side and one gentle firm side.

During testing, we weren’t fans of the plush side, which, as side sleepers, did not provide enough support and failed to prevent motion transfer. However, the firm side put this mattress back in our good graces and provided the right amount of stability to help us sleep soundly.

There are other perks to this latex mattress, like its durability and increased breathability. The extra airflow the mattress kept us cooler at night, preventing us from waking up due to warmth. But latex can take a little bit longer to break in than other materials, and the higher price of this particular bed isn’t necessarily justified by the dual-sided nature since you can only use one firmness level at a time. However, if you’re dead set on an organic mattress, Saatva provides quite a bit of information about its materials so that you can feel good about your purchase.

What We Like
  • Durable steel coils

  • Supports up to 500 pounds per side

  • Alleviates pressure on joints

What We Don't Like
  • Too firm for some

  • Not ideal for stomach sleepers

Designed to support sleepers who weigh up to 500 pounds (with a weight capacity of 500 pounds per side), Saatva’s HD Mattress provides plenty of support without allowing the layers directly beneath you to sink down too deeply. Like the Zenhaven from Saatva, this option is made with natural latex, which is notably durable and offers pressure point relief.

Though the HD is on the firm side of the scale, it doesn’t sacrifice comfort. When we tested it, the mattress still contoured to our bodies without losing much shape, a result of the 3-inch pillow top, CertiPUR-US Certified foam, and 12.5-gauge tempered recycled coils. However, do note that we felt it was more comfortable for us when we slept on our side and back, compared to when we slept on our stomachs. In our testing, we found that the firmness was a bit too high for our preferences when switching from stomach to side or back, though the mattress did still adapt to our shape well.

Even after multiple uses, no indentations were left in the mattress, demonstrating its ability to bounce back under strain. However, this level of firmness may be too intense for someone who prefers more cushioning or a softer, plusher mattress feel.

Final Verdict

If you’re in the market for a new queen mattress, our top pick is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid due to its impressive performance in multiple categories. During testing, it delivered comfort for every sleep position and cozily conformed to the body. We also love the reinforced edges, lifetime warranty, and white glove delivery. If you’re looking to spend less money on a mattress without sacrificing quality or comfort, we recommend the Linenspa Memory Foam and Innerspring Hybrid Mattress. For less than $500, you’re still getting a good mix of contouring support and plushness.

How We Tested the Queen Mattresses

We tested a total of 56 different mattresses, evaluating each model over the course of a month by examining factors such as comfort, support, sleep quality, and durability. After sleeping on the mattresses for weeks, we assessed comfort based on the feel of the mattress, its plushness or firmness, and whether it created a cozy, “sinking in” feel or a more solid and body-conforming consistency. We examined support by noting how the mattresses responded to our body weight and pressure, as well as how the materials adjusted or shifted to various sleep positions. In our testing, we had a variety of individuals of different heights and weights sleep on the mattresses to determine how each handled support for various body shapes, sizes, and sleep positions.

To determine how the mattresses we tested shaped our sleep quality, we noted any changes to our sleep at night, including whether or not it was interrupted, and how we felt upon waking up each morning. Additionally, we assessed how the mattresses performed with couples, kids, and pets, noting motion transfer levels and temperature fluctuations.

Finally, at the end of the testing period, we considered durability by examining the mattresses for any signs of wear. We looked for sagging, visible indentations in the mattress surface, and changes to the support or comfort feel after typical daily use.

What to Look For in a Queen Mattress

Mattress Type

Mattresses are typically categorized into one of the following types based on materials used, amount of comfort, and support they provide:

  • Innerspring: These mattresses are constructed with a layer of steel coils (which look like springs!) surrounded by cushy fibers like cotton or wool. As the most structured mattresses, innerspring models tend to provide sturdier support–and the higher the number of coils, the more support you’ll typically get.
  • Foam: Made out of layers of foam, this type of mattress is meant to cradle your body and conform to its shape while reducing motion transfer, or the ability to feel your partners, pets, or kids tossing, turning, or moving on the mattress. The category includes memory foam mattresses, which get softer and more pliable with body heat, as well as gel-infused foam mattresses, which can help with temperature regulation.
  • Latex: Similar to foam but made with sap sourced from rubber trees, latex mattresses are denser, springier, and more rubber-like in their support and feel.
  • Hybrid: These mattresses are made with a combination of materials, like layers of foam and coils. They pull elements of different mattress types into one, creating models that offer varying levels of comfort, support, pressure relief, and stability.

Of course, there’s variety within each of these types. For example, you can find innerspring or hybrid mattresses that feature a pillow top for extra plushness and body-conforming cushioning. These details can shape the firmness of your mattress, which will play a role in your comfort each and every night.

Material and Durability

Mattresses are made with a variety of different materials, and each of these materials come with added benefits and potential drawbacks. You’ll find that mattresses typically feature innersprings, comfort foam, memory foam, latex, gel, and even innovative responsive grids. These materials are often combined to create hybrid mattresses, but you’ll also see options made up solely of memory foam, latex, or innersprings and padding.

Material affects not only comfort, but also longevity. For example, with latex mattresses, you can expect natural temperature regulation and durable construction. Conversely, memory foam provides greater contouring support and does a better job at eliminating motion transfer, but it’s less breathable than latex. This is why many memory foam mattresses include features such as air perforations or gel to keep the foam from trapping in heat.

“Cooling off during the night increases deep sleep (slow wave sleep), which is essential to mental and physical well-being,” Dr. Dimitriu explains about the importance of finding a mattress that won’t cause you to overheat.

Height and Thickness

Thickness is a matter of preference, so keep that in mind when looking at the materials used. Take the Purple RejuvenatePlus Mattress, which is 16.5 inches thick and features seven distinct layers. The construction makes a huge difference in the feel and support offered, so you’ll need to decide if a thinner or thicker bed provides the right amount of comfort for you. If you prefer more layers of cushioning and have a preference for fluffier, sink-into-the-surface beds, you’ll likely enjoy a thicker mattress.

But it’s just as important to think about how high your mattress will be when added to your existing bed frame, especially if you’re pairing a thick model with a box spring. If you’re worried about getting in and out of bed comfortably—or are frequently joined by pets or kids—picking the correct mattress height is essential.

Firmness Levels

According to Dr. Dimitriu, “Most sleepers will usually prefer a softer mattress, while back sleepers do better with a more firm one.” With this in mind, we recommend the Purple Restore Mattress for back and stomach sleepers given its firmness rating. On the flip side, contouring around pressure points is very important for side sleepers, which is why we like the Linenspa Memory Foam and Innerspring Hybrid Mattress for its memory foam cushioning.

Standout Features

Trial Period

Now that most people purchase mattresses online, at-home trial periods are commonplace. Since many popular brands don’t have storefronts, a trial period allows you to try out a mattress in your home to see if it suits your sleep needs. On the shorter end, brands may offer 60- to 90-day trials; however, some brands, like Saatva, allow you to test their mattresses for a full year.

Warranty

Most major mattress brands provide warranties for their products. While individual brands’ mattress warranties will vary in terms of what, exactly, is covered, there are some typical warranty details you can (and should!) expect. At the most basic level, a mattress warranty should include repairs or replacement for any mattress with defects or structural flaws. This typically covers defects in workmanship and materials that appear with “normal” care and use. Sleeping and relaxing on the mattress would be considered normal wear, but kids and pets getting rough (chewing, jumping, and excessive pulling or tearing, for example) might not fall under the “normal” use definition.

Mattress warranties can range anywhere from a year to a lengthier 10-year warranty (brands like Purple offer one). Saatva is a standout here, as the brand provides a lifetime warranty on every one of its mattresses. Do be mindful, though, that for some mattresses, a 10-year warranty may actually cover the entire lifetime of your mattress.

It’s important to note that warranties and trial periods are different. While a warranty ensures your mattress will be repaired or replaced should unusual defects or damage appear with typical use, a trial period allows you to test out a mattress for its comfort and support. Under a warranty, you can’t expect a replacement mattress if you simply find you’ve chosen the wrong model for your needs.

Delivery and Setup

Getting a mattress delivered to your home has never been easier. Some online brands, like Casper, ship their products condensed and sealed in portable boxes that you cut open. Once the mattress is out of the box, just let it unfold and decompress in its designated room. Other companies, like Saatva, offer free white glove delivery so that you don’t have to lift a finger; the mattress is brought into your home and placed onto the bed frame for you.

FAQ
  • What is the best material for a queen-size mattress?

The best material for a queen-size mattress depends on your specific needs. Generally, “natural, breathable, and heat-dissipating materials are best,” says Dr. Dimitriu. Because queens are larger and may sleep more than one person, breathability is particularly important. Consider the Saatva Zenhaven Natural Latex Mattress if you’re worried about overheating during the night.

  • How often should you replace a queen mattress?

Dr. Dimitriu explains that this differs based on your mattress’ materials and whether or not you use a mattress protector. Local climate and humidity levels can also impact your bed’s lifespan. Latex can last between seven-and-a-half and eight-and-a-half years, hybrids can last between six-and-a-half and seven-and-a-half years, and foam can last between six and seven years.

  • What are the signs you need a new mattress?

“Discomfort [while] sleeping or painful pressure points in the hips, shoulders, or neck may be suggestive of a need for a new mattress,” says Dr. Dimitriu. Another telltale sign that it’s time for your mattress to go is visible wear, including dips in the mattress, tears in the material, and sagging.
