Furniture from Trash

Wednesday July 1, 2009

Jon Santiago and Amelia Cunardi are building furniture from trash. Now while the concept of reusing material is not anything new, what makes me happy is the fact that more and more people are doing it and creating some very beautiful sustainable furniture in the process.

According to the New York Daily News, the two are partnering with such groups as Sustainable South Bronx and Build it Green to set up their company which will be known as Re-Fab. Their suppliers already include a New Jersey furniture company which will channel its waste products to them instead of to landfills, and Build it Green which finds a home for construction waste.

Jon Santiago has an applied math degree from MIT and he has been working with Sustainable South Bronx on its Green Fab Lab project. Amelia Cunard has a degree in design from the Parson’s School of Design, and has been renovating used furniture. Re-Fab competed and was a finalist in the recent New York Green Business Competition.
