Demystifying Green - Make Tiny Changes
When you're going green, an all or nothing approach might not be the best way to go. In my opinion, making tiny changes might turn out to be easier.
For instance, switch to CFLs instead of using incandescent bulbs. Not only do they last much longer than they consume much less energy, too - about 75 percent less. On average CFls last about 10,000 hours. Switching to CFLs might be the easiest way to save energy, and cut your electricity bills.
You can begin making changes in your home furnishings also without making huge changes. When redecorating with accessories, look for rugs and pillows that are made using sustainable material. Buy bedding that is green. Instead of using paints and glues with high VOCs, and opt for ones that have lower VOCs.

I’m a huge proponent of going the environmentally friendly route. When I converted all my bulbs over to fluorescent there was a noticeable decrease in my electric bill. I never thought of buying furniture that also was environmentally friendly but its definitely something that I will consider in the future.
Don’t forget that those new lightbulbs have dangerous chemicals in them, and can’t just be thrown away when they do burn out. (For that matter, I’ve found that they last just as long, or rather, no longer!, that the old bulbs.
CFLs do have mercury in them, which is why you should handle them correctly when you dispose of them.
My personal experience with them has been pretty good regarding how long they last. I’ve had them in my home for over three years and all of them are still going without having to be replaced even once.
