Happy 2009! It's a brand new year, and there's so much to do. We've been reading about manufacturers vowing to do more to help the environment. Would you make an effort to buy green?

Hello Abe,
I just took your poll on Buying Green furniture and it distresses me that the predominant poll votes at this point(Friday, 6 PM EST) are for “Yes, if it is readily available.”
In my opinion, the first choice for buying green furniture can always be to visit a thrift shop, garage sale, or your own attic and to use the furniture as-is, or to refinish it, relieving the local landfill, your wallet and your neighbor’s wallet while sparing raw materials, which may not be sustainable.
Secondly, I am not a bleeding heart, tree-hugging, save-the-snail-darter kind of guy, but buying green whether it is spinach, cars, roses or an armoire usually means going the extra mile for an item not as readily available, not only a present for yourself but for the environment and our children.
Thanks for the Forum and Happy New Year!
ABC carpet in NYC has lots of great green furniture.

You bring up a lot of very interesting points in your very thoughtful comment. It’s amazing how this little poll mirrors much larger surveys. What this says to me is that, we need more information out there about what buying green or sustainable actually entails. The second (and encouraging) thing is that most people would buy green, if they had more information.
Thanks for putting focus on Green and Eco-friendly topics, it will help us all in the long run. I too believe it is a situation that relies heavily on availability.
